An Overview of the Children's Vision Landscape

  • National Eye Institute Overall/PEDIG
    Michael Repka, M.D.
    Dr. Michael Repka is a Professor of Ophthalmology and a Professor of Pediatrics at the prestigious Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. During his career, Dr. Repka has been nationally and internationally acclaimed for his work in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmology. Aside from his teaching and clinical duties, Dr. Repka is President-Elect of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS). He is also an involved member of several ophthalmic organizations, including the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus.

  • NEI's VIP Study
    Bruce Moore, O.D.
    Since 1997, Dr. Bruce Moore has been a Marcus Professor of Pediatric Studies at the New England College of Optometry. In addition to his professorial post, Dr. Moore is the chair of the department of Specialty and Advanced Clinical Care, the director of Infant and Young Child Service, teaches clinically in the Pediatric Optometry and Pediatric Contact Lens Services, and is the principal investigator for the Vision in Preschoolers Clinical Center in Boston, MA.Dr. Moore has written and published two textbooks and many papers throughout his career. His most recent book, "Eye Care for Infants and Young Children" has become the standard textbook in pediatric optometry for both students and practitioners.

  • National Center for Health Statistics & CDC Morbidity Report
    Asel Ryskulova, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D
    Dr. Asel Ryskulova is an epidemiologist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics in its Office of Analysis and Epidemiology. Within her wide range of responsibilities, a large portion of Dr. Ryskulova's time and focus is spent on Healthy People 2010, which is a set of health objectives for the Nation to achieve over the first decade of the new century. Prior to this, Dr. Ryskulova was an Officer for the Epidemic Intelligence Service and was a consultant in the World Bank's Health, Nutrition, and Population department. She received both her M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in Kyrgyzstan and her M.P.H. at the Boston University School of Public Health.

  • Screenings by School Nurses
    Linda Kimel, R.N., M.S.
    Ms. Kimel has been a school nurse for the Rockford public school district in Illinois for the past 15 years. She is very active in the Rockford public school community, with memberships in several health organizations including the Rockford Action for Children (Child Health Advocacy) Committee and the Rockford Public Schools Safety Committee. Ms. Kimel is also a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Illinois and National Association of School Nurses and the Illinois Public Health Association. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, her M.S. at Northern Illinois University, and her Nursing Certification at the University of Illinois - Chicago.

    Leslie Ellwood, M.D.
    A pediatrician by trade in the Fairfax area, Dr. Ellwood has been a leader in pediatrics in northern Virginia throughout his career. Dr. Ellwood is a faculty member of several medical schools in the area, including George Washington University, INOVA Fairfax Hospital - University of Virginia Pediatrics Residency, and the Georgetown University College of Medicine.
    Aside from his work in academia, Dr. Ellwood holds high-level positions in many medical organizations including, the Medical Society of Virginia, the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Medical Society of Northern Virginia.

    Joel N. Zaba, M.A., O.D.
    Dr. Joel Zaba, O.D. has been specializing in learning-related visual problems for over three decades in his private practice in Virginia. In addition, Dr. Zaba has held part-time faculty positions at several learning institutions including Old Dominion University. Dr. Zaba has lectured throughout the United States and internationally on the topic of vision and learning, and has made many national media appearances in a plethora of newspapers, magazines, and radio and television programs. He is also the author of numerous articles and research publications on the relationship between children and vision and learning. Dr. Zaba received his B.A. from the College of William and Mary, his O.D. from the Southern College of Optometry, and his M.A. in Human Growth and Development from the University of Maryland at College Park.

  • Massachusetts Model
    Jean Ramsey, M.D.
    Dr. Jean Ramsey is currently the Assistant professor of ophthalmology and pediatrics at Boston University and director of the pediatric ophthalmology service at Boston Medical Center. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's patient education committee.Dr. Ramsey has a private Ophthalmology practice in Taunton, Massachusetts. Jean.ramsey@bmc.org

  • Kentucky Model
    Bill Reynolds, O.D.
    Dr. Bill Reynolds is the President and CEO of Eye Care Centers, with offices located all throughout Kentucky. He is also the Clinical Director for the Kentucky Special Olympics Opening Eyes program and is the Legislative Chair for the Kentucky Optometric Association. In the world of academia, Dr. Reynolds is an adjunct faculty member at both the Southern College of Optometry and the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. Dr. Reynolds received his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville and his O.D. at the Southern College of Optometry.

  • North Carolina Model
    Cathy Doty, O.D.
    Dr. Cathy Doty specializes in pediatric optometry. Along with her husband, Dr. Doty operates the Family Eye Care optometric practice in North Carolina. Along with her venture in private practice, Dr. Doty has been an active member of several optometric organizations, including the Coastal Optometric District, the North Carolina State Optometric Society, and the North Carolina Vision Committee. She is also the most immediate past chair of the Better Vision Institute and served as a member of the prestigious medical advisory panel for over three years. Dr. Doty attained her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned her O.D. from the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Optometry.

    Jane Peele, M.A.Ed.
    Ms. Jane Peele is a National Board Certified Teacher in Early/Middle Physical Education. For the past 15 years, Ms. Peele has been a physical education teacher in the North Carolina public school system, and currently works in the Craven County school district.She received her B.S. in both physical education and dance education, and her M.A.Ed. from East Carolina University.

    Beth Lange, M.D.
    Dr. Beth Lange has been practicing pediatrics in Rhode Island since 1993, and is currently a Pediatrician at Waterman Pediatrics in Providence, RI. In addition to her professional duties, Dr. Lange is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Brown Medical School. She is also the Vice President of the Rhode Island chapter for the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Founding Member and Chair of the Pediatrics Council, and an active member of Coastal Medical, Inc.'s leadership. Dr. Lange received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.D. from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine.
